Burkitt Lymphoma-- also known as Burkitt's Lymphoma-- is a type of aggressive B-cell lymphoma that is commonly found among children. It is responsible for 30% to 40% of childhood lymphoma's a year. It has a cause mainly targeted towards the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) or mononucleosis. Although this is the main cause for Burkitt Lymphoma, not all of it's victims have EBV.
This disease has an extremely wide variety of areas in the human anatomy it effects, such as the; bowel, eyes, kidneys, overies, and the lymphoid glands below the arm in the jaw or in the neck.

Inheritance Pattern

Burkitt Lymphoma is a genetic disorder that results in a chromosome translocation of the Myc gene. The translocation means that parts of certain chromosomes are broken and lifted of misplaces in the karyotype. In the instance of Burkitt Lymphoma, there is a translocation in the specific chromosome of 8, where the Myc gene resides. This disrupts its usual function of controlling cell growth.

Treatment/Prognosis

Chemotherapy is the most focal point of treatment for this type of Lymphoma. Chemotherapy is the most common treatment for most types of cancer. Usually, Chemotherapy drugs are distributed through veins or main arteries. Other times the drugs are distributed into the spinal chord. This type of therapy is called Intrathecal Chemotherapy.

The medications used in various combinations based upon the types of Lymphoma and the level of fatality are; Cyclophosphamide, Vincristine, Doxorubicin, Methotrexate, Cytorabine, Ifosfamide, and Etoposide.

Other forms of treatments for this type of Lymphoma are;

Monoclonal Antibody therapy; These drugs target and stick to proteins on the cancer cells and simulates the immune system.
Steroid therapy; Steroids are used to help strengthen the lymph nodes and decrease the feeling of illness.

This disease usually targets children in tropical Africa.

Incidence/Frequency

This dsorders accounts for 30% to 40% of all childhood cancers. However, When Burkitt Lymphoma surveys from the past few years to surveys for the periods 1960 to 1972 and 1973 to 1990, the frequency has decreased in a dramatic way. Burkitt's lymphoma used to be responsible for 51.5% and 37.1%, of all childhood cancers.
